2018 K Calmsley Hill City Farm Excursion

20 May 2018

2018 Calmsley Hill 1781000

2018 Calmsley Hill 2771000

Holy Spirit Kindergarten students, together with their teachers and helpers, recently visited Calmsley Hill City Farm as part of their Science unit. Here they were able to get up close to a range of native and farmyard animals.

The children were very excited about their visit to the farm.

Some of the children told us what they liked ...

I liked when we patted the animals and when we went on the tractor ride. I also liked when I volunteered to have a go using the whip. I felt a bit nervous but it was fantastic.
Lucas  KW

I liked when the dog rounded up the sheep. I also liked the tractor ride because we went down a big hill. I was a little bit scared but it was great fun.
Kaden  KR

I patted a rabbit and a chick and they felt really soft. When I milked the cow milk came out of the udder. I felt very excited to go to the farm.

This week Jarara visited Holy Spirit and some of our students participated in a yarning circle โ€” a respectful cultural discussion where everyone had the opportunity to listen, learn, share, and connect. The experience provided valuable opportunities for students to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal culture, storytelling, and the importance of community and respectful conversation. Students engaged thoughtfully and showed great curiosity and respect throughout the session. We sincerely thank Jarara for sharing their time, knowledge, and experiences.๐Ÿ–ค๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ

Year 3 is currently learning how to plan, edit, and write informative texts about Ancient Civilisations. Students are developing their ability to use topic-specific vocabulary, include accurate facts, and write clear simple and compound sentences. They are also learning to use adjectives and adjectival phrases to make their writing more detailed and engaging for the reader. Check out this week's parent newsletter to read some of our great writing.

On Friday our Year 2 classroom turned into a tectonic workshop this week as we tackled the messy, wonderful world of volcanoes! Taking inspiration from the earthโ€™s natural wonders, our young geologists got stuck into the clay to build some truly explosive masterpieces. Watching the kids dive into their clay techniques was the best part of the day. Theyโ€™ve been busy pinching and pulling the clay into steep summits and using slab building to create those wide, sturdy bases. There was plenty of ""magic glue"" involved too, as they practiced scoring and slipping to keep their structures strong. Once the clay was set, the real magic happenedโ€”the children used vibrant paints to decorate their creations, splashing on fiery reds, glowing oranges, and smoky blacks to bring their rumbling mountains to life! We are so impressed with the focus and creativity Year 2 showedโ€”theyโ€™ve officially turned a bit of earth into something spectacular. Check out our actions shots from the day here -

๐ŸŒŸ Empowering Our Future Leaders: Year 6 Leadership Day! ๐ŸŒŸ Our Year 6 students recently stepped up to the challenge during our Stage 3 Leadership Day! This special event was all about moving beyond the idea of leadership as just a badge or a title, focusing instead on the purposeful skills, attitudes, and behaviors that allow every student to make a positive difference. Through the "Explore, Discover, Act" incursion, our students dove into a day of self-discovery and teamwork. They Explored what it means to lead with a shared vocabulary, Discovered their own potential through hands-on challenges, and learned how to Act authentically by applying these skills to their daily lives. We are so proud of the maturity and connection Year 6 showed. They arenโ€™t just preparing to be leaders in the future; they are leading right now! ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿค

๐ŸŽจ From Pixels to Pottery: Year 1โ€™s Robotic Creations! ๐Ÿค– Our Year 1 artists have been having so much fun bringing the digital world to life in the art studio this week! Weโ€™ve been exploring how technology and tradition can mix by sculpting our very own robots out of clay. It was amazing to watch the children transform simple lumps of clay into futuristic friends using some impressive new skills. They practiced pinching and pulling to find the perfect shapes, learned how to roll slabs for sturdy robot bodies, and mastered the "magic glue" of scoring and slipping to make sure those antennas and arms stay put. To give their bots that real mechanical feel, they decorated them with pipelines and buttons, adding so much character to every piece! We are so proud of their hard work and the way they used their hands to turn a bit of earth into something truly out of this world.
