Transitioning smoothly into ‘big school’: What parents need to know

The first day of Kindergarten!

It’s a milestone filled with excitement, pride and maybe a few nerves (for both you and your child!). Starting “big school” marks the beginning of a whole new adventure, and with a little preparation, you can help make those first weeks calm, confident and full of smiles.

1. Talk it up with excitement!
Children take their cues from you. Speak positively about school, the friends they’ll make, the fun activities and the stories they’ll hear. This helps build excitement rather than anxiety. If you’re feeling nervous, that’s normal too, just try to keep the focus on the positives!

2. Practise the little things
In the lead-up to school, have a few “practice mornings.” Pack the school bag, try on the uniform and walk or drive past the school together. Familiarity makes everything feel a little less overwhelming when the big day arrives.

3. Create a calm morning routine
Have a predictable morning - breakfast, get dressed, brush teeth, bag in hand. This helps children feel secure. Try it out before term starts so it becomes second nature. And remember: even if the first morning feels like a blur, a hug, a smile and a confident goodbye go a long way.

4. Expect tiredness (and big emotions)
Starting school is exciting and exhausting! Don’t be surprised if your child is extra tired or emotional in those first few weeks. Keep afternoons simple, with plenty of rest, snacks and downtime.

5. Stay connected
Ask open-ended questions like “What was the best thing you did today?” rather than “What did you learn?” And remember, every child settles in at their own pace. If you have any concerns, your child’s teacher is there to help.

Starting school is a big step, but it’s also the start of something wonderful - new friends, new skills and new adventures. At our Catholic schools, we’re here to partner with you in nurturing your child’s learning, faith and wellbeing from the very beginning.

🎅 Adorable Moments from Santa's Visit! 🎁 We were absolutely thrilled to welcome a very special guest to our infant class today: Santa Claus! Our littlest learners were full of wonder and curiosity as they met the man in the red suit. There were lots of happy smiles, gentle hand waves, and wide-eyed amazement! Even the most tentative babies enjoyed the festive cheer. It's such a joy to share these magical, first-time holiday experiences with our wonderful infants and their families. We hope these sweet memories bring a little extra sparkle to your holiday season! ✨

What a truly special way to commence our end of year events for our 2025 school year at Holy Spirit Primary School! 🙏 Today, we gathered for our End of Year Mass, celebrating the start of Advent—a time of joyful anticipation and preparation for Christmas. We were honoured to have Father Peci share a beautiful Homily with our students and community, reminding us that we encounter Jesus in three wonderful ways: In History: We learn and reflect on the amazing story of Jesus’ birth—the very reason for our Christmas celebration! 🌟 In Daily Life: We encounter Him every day when we make room for Him in our hearts and actions. It's about living out His message of love and kindness. ❤️ Again (Second Coming): We hold the promise that Jesus will come again to make all things new! This gives us hope for the future. 🌍 This mass marks the official close of a fantastic 2025 where our focus has been centered on student growth and the overall wellbeing of every child in our care. We are so proud of the progress our students have made! Our last day of school for 2025 is Wednesday 17th December. Please join us, if you can, on Wednesday for our End of Year Assembly and Christmas Performance. We wish all our families a very safe, holy, and Merry Christmas. We look forward to seeing everyone refreshed in the new year!

Their leadership, service, and joy truly reflect the spirit of giving. 💛 Thank you to every student, family, and staff member who contributed. Together, we continue to shine Christ’s light through kindness and compassion. ✨

🌟 Year 2 has been busy sequencing the Christmas Story! 🌟 Our amazing Year 2 readers listened carefully to the story of Jesus’ birth (Luke 2:1-20) and did a fantastic job putting all the events in the right order. From the census announcement right up to the shepherds praising God, they showed brilliant comprehension!

Students in Year 3 are learning to recognise that artists create art for a variety of reasons and that artworks can be interpreted in multiple ways. Using photography and the Canva website, students used iPads or Chromebooks to take photos of a classroom object, upload their images into a Canva drawing template, and create a repeating pattern featuring at least four repetitions of their chosen object.
